Born in the very small community of Englishtown Cape Breton, Michael began playing in local Pubs when he was 16 and never stopped. Now living in Dartmouth he plays in a variety of venues and teaches fiddle, mandolin and guitar lessons. It would be hard to pin Michael down to one specific style; he writes his own lyrics and music and tends to add his own personal touch to every song he covers. Michael excels at and enjoys tapping into what the crowd will best relate to, so he knows when to keep everyone on the dance floor and when the time is right for the deeper more meaningful music that illustrates his traditional ties to the Island. From Michael you will hear rock, folk, oldies and celtic tunes, a mix of radio hits from today as well as his own original music. He is a dynamic artist; one that is great in any atmosphere.
Michael also plays in a Duo with father Tracy Cavanaugh, former lead singer of celtic rock bands Greyloch and Bogart.
Michael also belongs to the band, Half Step Down. They are new to the Halifax scene but have been receiving rave reviews from their fans. Half Step Down is comprised of Michael Cavanaugh as lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Bert Anderson as lead guitarist and Stephen MacNeil on the Bass. The band is unique in that they often switch up their instruments throughout each set to incorporate fiddle, mandolin, electric and acoustic guitar and electric bass. They play everything from Rock-n-Roll to Country and Blues, but are known for their high-tempo East Coast style.
